Dille,
Temporary Chairman, in the absence of Governor John C. Vivian, Chairman, and
Chri~ Wallrich, Vice.Chairman.

The evening meeting was devoted to a report and consideration of the
underground water investigational program which is being conducted in the
State of Colorado under a cooperative contraot between the Colorado Water
Conservation Board and the U. S. Geological Survey. This underground water
program was initiate~ a year and a half ago under an appropriation by the
Colorado legislature making available to the Board $25,000 for the biennium,
with which to match an equal amount of money allocated by the U. S. Geological
Survey for underground water studies in the State.

Stanley W. Lohman of the U. S. Geological Survey in charge of the
underground water study in the State, gave an extended report on the status of
investigations which had been made to date. He reported that the field work
in the Big Sandy area had been completed and a report for that area. would be
ready about the Tirst of January. The investigations in the San Luis yalley,
confine~ up to this time to the so-called Sump Drain study, were nearly
complete and a report would be available about the first of July, 1947. He
called attention to the fact that it would now be necessary for the ,Board to
designate other areas within the State for the next phase of intensive investi-
gations. He mentioned that Baca County in Eastern Colorado and a general
underground water study in the San Luis Valley had been disoussed with the
Director of the Board as probably the two areas where such further intensive
studies should be made. He reviewed the work which had been done at a number
of places in Colorado where underground water problems arose, particularly
with reference to domesti~ water supplies from underground sources.

J

Thad McLaughlin, geologist on the U. S. Geological Survey staff for
the underground water study in Colorado, was called upon to describe in detail
the investigation and field work in the Big Sandy area in Colorado.

Mr. Silmon Smith, a member of the Board from Grand Junction, Colorado,
reported on pending underground water adjudication proceedings which were
pending in the Seventh Judicial District. These proceedings pertain to water
supplies from a well located near Grand Junction. In this connection Mr.
Lohman reported with respect to factual information which had been obtained
. with respect to underground water supplies near Grand Junction, Colorado and
the effects of pumping from such supplies.
