703

ACTIVITIES OF ENGINEERING STAFF

I

The Engineering Staff has several continuing
activities on which records are kept up to date. One is the
annual check of irrigated acreage and storage in Jackson
County.

The original aerial photographs were made in 1937,
and the original map was made in 1940. Photography made in
1952 is now available, and large scale topographic maps are
being completed by the U. S. G. S. An engineer on our staff
is transferring our data to the new maps and photos. This
will facilitate the future field work in the area. Two men
will make the field check this year early in June.

Records of ditch diversions from the Arkansas
River are kept on a current basis. Also records of stream
flows and diversions in the San Luis Valley. The latter
are used to bring up to date the numerous relationships
which were studied and developed in our San Luis Valley sur-
vey, relative to uses and deliveries at the State line.

At present, work is being done on monthly deple-
tions of the Colorado River system by units of the Cliffs-
Divide Project above Glenwood Springs. We have completed
a study showing the effects of monthly transmountain diver-
sions presently having water rights on the flows of the Colo-
rado River at Glenwood Springs and Cameo. The period used
is 1934-1954, since this represents more than 20 years of
comparatively low flows.

The next step is to impose depletions by potential
projects mentioned in the Colorado Storage Project Act. to
determine total effects on stream flows for different condi-
tions of development. The Bureau of Reclamation estimated
the monthly depletions for the1929-1942 period. We are ex-
tending these for the later years. There are two men in
vacant positions on a temporary basis working on this study.

I

A member of the staff is recording diversions of
direct flow for various reaches of the South Platte River.
together with stream flows into the sections. going back
to 1928. The period 1928-1955 will include two groups of
years of very low flows. The figures will be analyzed. and
various methods of correlation employed to determine whether
there are any effects which might be attributed to increased
use of ground water.
