COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD

.

AgricuIturallMuIti-Purpose Water Use Efficiency Demonstration Grants

SB92-87 Progress Report as of March 1999

Bent Soil Conservation District - Surge Technology Irrigation Demo

Progress Status: Completed Funding: $36,480 County: Bent
Completion Date: 12/30/96 Grant Contact: Ron Ziehm
Grant Purpose: To demonstrate the applicability of surge technology on heavy textured soils and
irrigation efficiency.

This project is the result of a reduction of non-crop consumptive use, reduction in the salinity
increase, more precise control of timing and application of the water; and, realization by the
farmers oflabor savings and irrigation savings without further costs. This project demonstrated
the applicability of surge technology on heavy textured soils; documented the impact of surge
irrigation technology on irrigation efficiency; farm economics; management; plant-soil-water
relationships; and, developed the media resources needed to convey this information to others.

Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District - Interruptible Supply Contracts Study

. Progress Status: Completed Funding: $12,000 County: Larimer
Completion Date: 12/31/95 Grant Contact: Brian Werner
Grant Purpose: To evaluate the concept of contracting dry year options from agriculture to
municipal.

This project is the result of an interruptible supply contract for sharing water between different
user sectors. A promising water supply alternative for northern Colorado. This ensures supply
for municipal and industrial users in times of shortages without purchasing and maintaining
water rights that are needed only occasionally and leaving ownership in agricultural hands. Also,
this formalizes a process for municipalities in northeastern Colorado to contract directly with
farmers to be compensated for fallowing land in order to provide domestic water during dry
years.

Town of Nucla - Raw Water Irrigation

Progress Status: Completed Funding: $100,000 County: Montrose
Completion Date: 12/30/98 Grant Contact: Mary Helen deKoevend
Grant Purpose: To measure the benefits of a non-potable irrigation system for community
residents.

.

This project was the completion of phase II-B designed to decrease consumption of treated water
and created a water-efficient irrigation system by using raw water to irrigate lawns and gardens.
This system included separate metering and fee structure for raw water, education in water-
efficient landscaping and irrigation, and completion of a state-approved water conservation plan
for the community. This project also included installing water mains and adding taps.
