and in the interim, we need to find some solution.

- .
We:believe we have found a solution. We expect to get a very substantial
federal grant to assist Dove Creek, and with the amount-of money that
the.state can produce, we believethat'we can get an immediate.solution
to the 'problem, which will fit in beautifully with the long:term: ,
solution when water is'made available to,Dove Creek through the Dolores
project.

I

.
It's not only Dove Creek. There.are-also'some several:hundred'farm
families in-the ~mmediate vicinity of Dove Creek, who now haul water
when it's available from the town of Dove Creek.

I think; Mr; Chairman,:there are representatives here from Dove Creek ~
this morning. .',

MR.. STAPLETON: All right. Would anyone like to speak in behalf of this
project from Dove Creek?

MRS. JAMES: I'm Barbara James. I'm Trustee for ,the town of Dove Creek.

Mi; Spa~Ks; in his presentation, has given us a'very:thorough and ade-
quate coverage. There:were a 'couple of things that were a bone of
contention that I did want to bring out here on the sununary of our '
problem.

It was indicated that our water pumping production drops off in the fall
and summer. That's an incorrect:statement. It disappears. (Laughter.)

Dove Creek frequently is forced to close its schools" its restaurants,-
its motel - its one motel, the town offices" the court house, everything
must cease and come to a halt, because of the:health hazard~involved:in
trying to operate a town and other public-entities without water; I
want to make that very clear. It was mentioned in here that ,we cut off
lawn watering and car washing. We also cut off showers and laundry
facilities and. things of this nature. This problem is not a minor prob-
lem., This is a continuing problem , that is very large in scalecand
scope. It costs the taxpayers .a~great deal of ,money: each year,:of
course, to close the schools and court house and many other buildings;
Not ,only is it a costly pumping 'system to begin with, but the water,is
so limited and:of such poor quality, that the people rarely get what
they pay.for. '

I won't take up any more of your time, but I think sometimes that
evidence is the best demonstrator of a project for consideration. I
have here with me a water: sample that 'was drawn from ' the Blue Mountain
Cafe in the middle cif the business 'and operating hours, and I would:
like to present it to the Board.

(Laughter. )

I

MR.. STAPLETON: Thank you. (Laughter.)

MR.; ,SPARKS: .We don't have to sample it, do we?

-10-
