.

.

.

Product Produced: The CWCB would hire a contractor to examine the use of gravel pits for water
storage and augmentation purposes. Such storage vessels could be used for new storage, to regulate
stream flows and for other purposes. The CWCB would work closely with the CGS, the Division of
Minerals and Geology and the rock products industry on the study,

Water Planning Relationship: The potential exists for gravel pits to the need for more water storage
capacity, Studying the available gravel pits and their capacity for retaining water may prove to be an
efficient means to effect new storage for the state.

Recommendation: Staff gives a low recommendation to this because oflimited funding available and
that this proposal may be addressed during the Statewide Water Assessment Study or could be addressed
if local entities apply for local planning funds associated with other requests,

5. Colorado River Selenium Monitoring

Beneficiary/Grantee/Contractor: CWCB, Various
Amount of Request: $25,000

Ranking:

Low

Product Produced: The CWCB would hire a contractor to examine the need for monitoring selenium
concentrations and loads at various points in the Colorado River Basin and to determine whether
existing salinity control projects can control selenium levels, Such a project would help Colorado
protect its entitlements to Colorado River Water by reducing the potential for water quality concerns to
interfere with future project development.

Water Planning Relationship: This study would provide a basis for targeting irrigation
improvement projects financed through the salinity control program to areas where selenium
concentrations are problematic to local water users and/or excessive selenium loads enter the basin
causing problems downstream in the Lower Basin,

Recommendation: Staff gives a low recommendation to funding for this study because other sources
of funding, primarily federal, may be available since selenium is a concern to all seven of the Colorado
River Basin states,
6. Denver Basin Database

Beneficiary/Grantee/Contractor: Colorado Geological Survey
Amount of Request: $29,600

Ranking:

Low

Product Produced: Study involving the collection and analysis of data to develop a unified water
quality database for the Denver Basin Bedrock Aquifer System for water users, Phase I will compile,
evaluate and assess data,

Water Planning Relationship: The Study would provide a central database that local water planners
could use relative to water quality,

Recommendation: Staff gives a low recommendation to funding for this study because of the limited
funding and because the South Platte DSS is being desigued to collect this data,

7. South Platte River AlluviumlDenver Basin Aquifers

Beneficiary/Grantee/Contractor: Colorado Geological Survey
Amount of Request: $60,000

Ranking:

Low

5
