<br />COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD <br />823 State Centennial Building <br />1313 Sherman Street <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />December 1980 <br /> <br />2~QQ~lf!=2~~Q_QE~~2_~~!~E2~~Q_fEQ~~f! <br /> <br />1~!EQQQf!IQ~ <br /> <br />The Sedgwick-Sand Draws Watershed covers an area of 104 square <br /> <br />miles or 66,714 acres in parts of SedgwiCk County, Colorado and <br /> <br />Cheyenne and Deuel Counties, Nebraska. <br /> <br />The watershed is 17 miles in <br /> <br />length, averages about six miles in width, and consists of 16 south- <br /> <br />easterly trending ephemeral water courses, mostly unnamed, which <br /> <br />originate mainly in Nebraska and flow into the South Platte River <br /> <br />in Colorado. <br /> <br />Land use in the watershed consists of 12,775 acres of irrigated <br /> <br />cropland, 27,540 acres of non-irrigated cropland, 24,079 acres of <br /> <br />rangeland and 2,320 acres miscellaneous. <br /> <br />fEQ~~~~ <br /> <br />The major watershed problem is frequent floodwater sediment and <br /> <br />erosion damage that results from runoff produced by high intensity <br /> <br />summer thunderstorms. <br /> <br />Damage occurs throughout the floodplain to agricultural land, <br /> <br />crops, irrigation facilities, the railroad, roads and bridges, parts <br /> <br />of the residential section of the town of Ovid, Colorado and other <br /> <br />improvements in the floodplain. <br /> <br />Under present conditions, damages begin at the two-year frequency. <br /> <br />The estimated average annual floodwater damages for the watershed are: <br />
