Evans talks trouble
lawmakers

By _~,t,~_.c;i~_".OI.l..I.~.9Jl
Denver Post Staff Writer

(f:) Related articles

Feb. 10, 2001 - Two Colorado lawmakers
trying to save the gateway to Mount Evans from residential
development warned iocal county officials that negotiations
under way could harm efforts to preserve the land.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Littieton, and Rep. Mark Udall, D-
Boulder, have pushed Congress to allocate money for the U.S.
Forest Service to buy 5,500 acres along Squaw Pass near
Evergreen, which leads to Mount Evans.

The lawmakers sent the letter to Golden and Clear Creek
County, which are negotiating an agreement to rezone 5,500
acres known as Beaver Brook that could increase the value of
the land and the price the Forest Service would have to pay.

"Actions that would affect the cost of the acquisitions could
directly affect the Iikeiihood of having the property acquired by
the United States," Tancredo and Udall wrote.

Golden City Manager Mike Bestor said the two lawmakers'
concerns can be mollified by bringing both sides together to
discuss the issue.

Golden owns the Beaver Brook land, which lies in Clear Creek
County, and has wanted to sell it to developers to raise $12
million or more to pay for a new reservoir near Empire and
water rights.

The Forest Service moved to buy the land after Golden
announced its interest in selling it. The land, long used as elk
calving grounds, is prized for its value to wildlife and for
recreation.

"The higher the price tag on a property, the harder it is to keep
Congress and everybody excited about it," said Steve Rinella of
the Forest Service's regional office in Denver..

The negotiations between Golden and the county are an
attempt to settle two disputes: one over the zoning of Beaver
Brook; the other over water rights.

http://www.denverpost.com/news/news0210k.htm

2/12/2001
