STAPLETON:

MR. BERTHELSON:

"Any questions from members of the Board?
Si, as our member on the Water Pollution Control
Commission, do you have any questions?"

"No. I'd like to make a statement later on.
No questions."

"All right.

Any questions from members of the audience?

Si, then now is the time for your report.
Si, after two months on the commission, has some
comments for us."

"I have just a couple of observations and
a couple of requests to make of this Board.

After two months of service I know now why
Herb Vandemoer had a big smile on his face when
they passed this mantle to me! It's an interest-
ing exercise to say the least. I need some more
help though; you assigned Mr. Longley to help
me and he is an engineer and has done a commend-
able job in attending some of these hearings
with me and so forth, but I really need more
staff. I need a secretary and a legal advisor.
I hope that you can find some way to furnish
these. I need a secretary to help carry these
papers around. They reproduce testimony at
these hearings that were held around the state
and I couldn't even carry them, let alone read
them! Of course, they kick around a lot of big
terms on this water pollution board like eutro-
phication and hypolimnion and all this stuff
and I don't know what they mean and maybe we
could find a lawyer that could interpret this
for me as we go along."

"We could buy you a dictionary, Si. We can
afford that."

"We'll get you a young ecologist!"

"I'll settle for that if that's the best
you can do.
