bigger meeting than this -- and I heard
the same thing. It's not a new approach.
It's just a new deal. It was so old that
people forget. The memory forgets. There
are men living right in this room tonight,
today, that will remember what was said
at that meeting in Monte Vista. The same
thing was said, Sellers, right? Isn't
that the same thing they talked about?
And I can't see nature changing this long
drought cycle, it might be increasing or
we might get temporary relief, but also
remember that you can't put more water
in a stream by building a dam than the
Lord put in it, you can't do it. It's
that simple. I didn't learn that in
engineering school. I had to learn that
the hard way afterwards.

My name is Valdez, Route 2, Alamosa.

Whsn I was.13 years old, I traveled
in these mountains. What surprised me was
there were so many lakes in these mountains
and streams. And I have been watching.
I have been going every year since and
watching these lakes and streams and ever
since we started pumping water here in the
valley to save our crops I have been
watching the streams. When we started
pumping allover this valley and I think
we are already doing more pumping in this
valley, maybe more than enough. I have
been watching these lakes and the streams
up in the mountains and you would be
surprised the creeks and the lakes are
going dry. As soon as we start pumping,
running this, all this pumping -- and you
even see a lot of this timber going dry
in the mountains and there has been a
big difference in the mountains ever since
we started pumping.
