JUOI

I

who want one site insist it's better geologi-
cally than the other site. So again we are
caught in a layman's opinion of how good the
two sites are. In order to resolve this ques-
tion we asked the Bureau to do core drilling
on two sites upstream. The core drilling, as
Mr. Greer has already indicated, turned out far
worse than we anticipated. There is now a
serious question in our minds that the Weld
County site will hold water at all without
tremendously expensive treatment. The Narrows
site also has some weaknesses, particularly on
the south side of the river. Part of it will
be on old buried river channel.

Again, not being a geologist, I have
simply thrown up my hands and called in an
independent 'consulting firm, Woodward-Clyde-
Sherard and Associates, and asked them to make
an evaluation of the two sites. both cost-wise
and how much leakage would occur at either
site. This is one of the leading geological
firms in the country and specializes in soil
foundation conditions. We have very limited
funds in order to make these surveys but we
are trying to stretch the funds that we have
and obtain funds from other sources to try to
get these independent surveys. The result is
that we will make every possible effort to
attempt at least to make a further analysis
of these two sites, other than what has been
done by our own staff and by the Bureau of
Reclamation.

I

I don't think the problem is ever: going
to be resolved. We keep hoping that we will
find a project upon which there is unanimous
agreement in the state of Colorado, but I think
that will come, perhaps, in about the year 4000
when there is no water left to worry about.

We had another meeting of the Steering
committee scheduled for December 6th. It now
appears that we will not be able to complete
the new studies by that date. It will be some-
time in January before the Steering Committee
will meet. After that we hope to be able to
