J..\)vf

I

for quite a width. So far nothing has
gone'through the target area of that type.
This could be chance, I don't know. On
several occasions, checking these hail in~
dicators we passed around to you here, we
have found differences in hail intensity
inside and outside the target area with the
difference right on the line. Again this
could be chance, we don't know.

I think it might be well to close this
off by reading to you a report of one of
the men that have been out in the field
watching two particular cells, this wason
the 25th of June and I think it is easiest
to read this. This came from Mr. Morovntz
. who has been in the field checking indica-
tors and doing some of the work on this
particular study:

I

'While checking indicators in the vicinity
of Peetz, Colorado, I observed two cumulus
cells building, one inside the target area
near Crook and another outside of the tar-
get area northeast of Julesburg. Both
clouds began to build at the same time but
differences were noted in their development
as follows: 5 minutes after 5, or 1705,
the middle third of cloud No. lover Crook
inside the target area began to show ice
crystals and cell No. 2 over Julesburg was
still building and showed no such effect.
1710, 5 minutes later, the top of the cloud
Over Crook shows ice crystals; No. 2 shows
no ice crystals but continues to build. Ten
minutes later, 1715, cloud No. 1 is now com-
pletely iced and decreasing in intensity;
cell No. 2 is still building and does not
show these ice crystal effects. Twenty
minutes later; 1725, the remains of cell
No. 1 is being jointed to cell No. 2 north~
east of Julesburg. Later inspection showed
that only light hail damage occurred from
cell No.1 in the vicinity of Crook inside
the target area, with moderate hail damage
in a path about 15 miles wide extending
from Big Springs, Nebraska to Imperial, about
50 miles. Later checking with the Weather
Modification records showed that cell No. 1
over Crook had been seeded by aircraft, but
cell No. 2 over Julesburg had not been
seeded. Rainfall amounts near Crook were
less than one inch, while rainfall up to
