1536

I mentioned before that some of the
people are protesting because they think
they are being robbed of water. Some of the
effects are quite spectacular and I have a
few pictures here that I would like to pass
around to you to show you some of these
effects. ,These are several shots taken at I
one time from a'given point, turning around
at different directions. We will hold
these up here and we will pass them around. .
This is a picture taken from the Sterling
airport and you will notice as this picture
passes around, the difference between the
clouds in the-right hand side and the left
hand side of the picture. The right hand
side of the picture extends south of the
target area where clouds were not seeded.
The left hand side is within the target
area where clouds were seeded. You will
notice there is a decided difference in
the physical appearance of the clouds.

We have another picture taken from the
same location and in this case, in about. the
middle of the picture here we have one cumu-
lus cloud, where you will notice on one side
of it a lot of fuzzy tracks, on the other
side it is a very hard and definite cloud.
These are typical effects that show up
from seeding with silver iodide.

As a matter of interest, the avail-
able literature is rather sparse on this
point. Common estimates for nuclei for
precipitation increase are recommended on
the order of.a thousand nuclei per square
yard. Based on estimates of the operation
out there yesterday and the day before,
they give us an estimate of about 100 times
that many nuclei. Just what this does to
precipitation increase or decrease, we
frankly don't know, but this is the type of
thing that we would like to work on to try
to find out.

Physical changes in the clouds are
something that we have seen. Other indi-
cations - again this could be purely by
chance but so far this season there have
been several major hail storms that have
gone both north of the target area and
south of the target area over a long path

I
