.l..vvU

these'clouds are dissipating we are being
robbed of moisture in the area, particu-
larly in the northern and western sections
of this area where.they are having a dry
summer.

In addition to the protests from that I
athrea'tand ihncidenttally thibos itS getting to . .
e sage were hey are a u to circulate
a petition to stop this seeding operation,
on the southern border near Yuma and Wray
there is some protest from that area be-
cause they think they are receiving too
much precipitation and too much hail be-
cause of the seeding activities conducted
around Sterling.

So far as' our o,vn role in this is con-
cerned I think it might be well to clarify
that. We were requested by representatives
of the northeastern Colorado district - they
asked us 'Can you study this problem for
us and c9me up with a yes or no answer on
whether or not hail is being suppressed by
this operation?'. Their problem is very
simple - they are 'putting out $65,000 this
summer and they are wanting to know whether
or not their money is being well spent. We
told them we had some ideas on how this
might be done and also we told them we
thought this was more than a problem of
simply yes or no on hail suppression but
also there's a lot of water involved, when
you think'of one additional inch more or
one additional inch less over 3,000 square
miles amounts to about 150,000 acre feet of
water.

I think that is enough for the back-
ground.' I would like to continue with this
and to give you a brief picture of the types
of data being collected, the types of analyses
that can be performed, the anticipated re-
sults that we think we can get out of this I
study from some of the indications to date.
So far as the, type of data that we can col-
lect in this area, which includes, of course,
the Weather Bureau aata that is available,
in addition to this we have requested in-
formation from residents living in or near
sections 8 and 26 of each township ranging
from about Akron to the north and Grover to
