JVJOoJ:

in many areas and loss of snow in the
mountains through early melting and evapora-
tion indicates a low runoff this season unless
excessive precipitation occurs. carryover
storage in reservoirs will provide adequate
water for the areas that have storage facili-
ties.

Although scheduled field work has been
completed in the piceance Basin and the report
is being prepared, considerable field activity
is still going on. The Bureau of Mines and AEC
are letting contracts to deepen their Yellow
Creek No. 1 test hole and to drill an addi-
tional test hole. A program of logging and
hydrologic testing is scheduled for both test
holes. The proposed in situ recovery of oil
from the oil shale and other activities cur-
rently under development will require contin-
uous monitering and evaluation of the water
resources in the piceance Basiil. By-cooper-"
ating with other agencies and interests that
are doing testing in the Basin, much hydrologic
data can be obtained at a comparatively low
cost and the development of the basin will
be aided.

Work continues on the testing and analysis
of the analog model of the Arkansas Valley.
Seven members of the Southeastern Colorado
Water conservancy District and John Patterson
of the State Engineer's office visited the
Analog Model Unit in phoenix on February 23
to view the model. The Hydrology Conunittee
of the Arkansas Valley Task Force held a
meeting in the Analog Model unit Laboratory
in Phoenix on April 1. F. L. Sparks, Direc-
tor, Fred Boydston and Carter Hutchinson of
the Colorado Water Conservation Board, A.
Ralph Owens, State Engineer, and George
Colburn of the State Engineer's office, Mor.
ton Bittinger of Colorado State University,
Ralph Strother of the Albuquerque Corps of
Engineers office, and L. A. Wood, D. R. Albin,
C. T. Jenkins, and J. E. Moore of the Geologi-
cal survey attended the meeting. John Moore

I

I
