<br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Letter - Dan Merriman <br />October 21, 1992 <br />Page 2 <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />quantification phase of this project. <br /> <br />FISHERIES AND WILDLIFE RESOURCES <br /> <br />Numerous terrestrial wildlife species are known to utilize the <br />Little Dry Creek corridor: fox, raccoon, skunk, rabbit, fox <br />squirrel, and muskrat just to name a few. Over 60 species of birds <br />have been observed in the Little Dry Creek corridor including wood <br />duck, kingfisher, herons, numerous raptors, swallows, and song <br />birds. While it will be difficult to link any of these species to <br />a instream flow amount, the importance of the riparian zone and the <br />integrity of the entire ecosystem is essential to the continued <br />presence of these wildlife resources in this urban setting. In <br />this regard it is my opinion that Dr. Cooper's work will be an <br />essential component to protect the integrity and diversity of this <br />ecosystem. <br /> <br />On October 8, 1992 the Division of Wildlife conducted a <br />fishery survey at two sites on Little Dry Creek. The fish <br />population is dominated by creek chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus) <br />and white suckers (Catostomus commersoni), also present were small ~ <br />numbers of fathead minnows (Pimephales .promelas). Basic water. . <br />quality parameters were also sampled at this time. <br /> <br />Detailed results of the above inventories will be provided to <br />the Board in the final quantification report. <br /> <br />GROUNDWATER AND SURFACE WATER STUDIES <br /> <br />The city of Greenwood Village has been monitoring water <br />surface elevations in Dr. Cooper's eleven observation wells and <br />three staff gages several times each week. This data has been <br />transmitted to both Dr. Cooper and me every other week. Stage vs. <br />discharge relationships have been developed for each of the three <br />staff gages. In addition to this data, Spronk Water Engineers have <br />installed a staff gage in Cherry Hills Village and one of the local <br />residents, Ms. Georgie Fernandes, has religiously read that gage on <br />a daily basis since April, 1992. In summary, we will have a fairly <br />good picture of the flow regime of the stream as well as a fairly <br />good understanding of the groundwater - surface water interactions. <br />This information should be useful in both the determination of <br />water availability and the link between the surface water <br />hydrology, the groundwater hydrology, and the riparian ecosystem. <br /> <br />INSTREAM FLOW STUDIES <br /> <br />I will be utilizing the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology <br />and Physical Habitat simulation System (PHABSIM) and R2CROSS to <br /> <br />e <br />
