wild and Scenic Rivers Legislation

Introduction

During 1983 and 1984, the Board reviewed the Colorado rivers
which had been studied for possible inclusion in the wild and
Scenic Rivers System. The Board also reviewed S. 1084,
introduced in the last Congress, which bill would have designated
several Colorado rivers, authori~ed studies of additional
Colorado rivers, and made generic amendments to the Wild and
Scenic Rivers Act. The Board ultimately decided to take no
action on the pending legislation or on proposed wild and scenic
river designations because it did not appear that any proposals
would move through the last Congress. This in fact proved to be
the case.

Discussion

I have been advised by Congressman Mike Strang's office that
Congressman Bruce Vento, ~nairman of the Subcommitte on National
Parks and Recreation, House Committee on Interior and Insular
Affairs, has asked for and received from the U.S. Forest Service,
as a drafting service, a draft wild and scenic rivers bill (copy
enclosed). The draft bill includes designation of segments of
several Colorado rivers:

Elk
Conejos
Los pinos
Dolores

piedra
Cache la Poudre
Encampment
