I I ~~~~ Since our report to the Beard en 23 June 1966, emergency bank prctecticn work has been ccmpleted en purgatcire River at the Linden Avenue bridge in Trinidad, and repairs have been made tc damaged levees en the Arkansas River in the vicinity cf Beene. This completes the emergency wcrk requested by lccal interests in the Arkansas River Basin in Cclorado. Representatives cf the Albuquerque District inventcried the flccd damages in Fremcnt and Custer ccunties, Cclcradc, caused by flccds en Grape Creek, Bernard Creek, and Arkansas River during the pericd 1-5 August 1966. Tctal damages resulting frcm the storms are estimated to exceed $460,000 in Custer and Fremont Counties, of which about $117,000 cccurred in the urban area cf Cotcpaxi, Colcradc. Valuable information was also cbtained on rainfall, peak discharges, and the need fer flcod control imprcvements from the reccnnaissance and interviews with lccal interests, city, ccunty, state. and federal cfficials in the area. Data ccllected will be utilized tc assist in determining the feasibility and eccncmic justi- ficaticn cf pctential projects being considered in ccnnection with the current study cf water rescurces develcpment by the Albuquerque District in Arkansas River subbasin abcve Jchn Martin Dam. significant progress has been made in recent mcnths by the Purgatcire River Water Ccnservancy District and the Bureau cf Reclamation tcward ccnsummaticn cf an irrigaticn repayment contract for the Trinidad Reservoir project. Details regarding this progress will nc dcubt be reported by the Bureau cf Reclamaticn. It now appears that the irrigation repayment ccntract may be executed by 1 January 1967. Based on this assumpticn, the Albuquerque District has scheduled resumption of planning and land acquisition en 1 January 1967 and expects tc be able to award a ccntract for ccn- structicn cf the cutlet wcrks by March 1967. The investigaticns and studies fer flcod contrcl and re- lated purposes in the Arkansas River Basin in Coloradc have been advanced generally in acccrdance with schedules. Numercus prcjects of various types are under ccnsideration for flccd ccntrcl. The feasibility of pcssible prcjects is being tested at this time and ccordinaticn cf plans with ether agencies has been initiated. AS socn as practicable, arrangements will be made to present the pre- liminary findings to local interests, state, and ether federal agen- cies.
