You have been receiving from the Direc- <br />tor's office some technical detail about this <br />and the pros and cons, and I'd like Larry to <br />summarize the material and where we stand on <br />this item." <br /> <br />"Gentlemen. we sent you some information con- <br />cerning the proposed protective works for the <br />Rainbow Natural Bridge which is located in Ari- <br />zona. The proposed cost of those protective <br />works, the maximum cost that I have sl!en, is <br />about $25,000,000. Detailed surveys have been <br />done over the past few years by geologists from <br />the United States Geological Survey and by peo- <br />ple from the Bureau of ReclAmation and by various <br />independent people. We sent you a summary of an <br />article by Professor I'loodbury of Utah University <br />covering his attitude and his remarks pertaining <br />to these proposed protective works. <br /> <br />Recently you saw in the newspapers that a <br />large party from the Bureau of Reclamation and <br />other interested parties, including the Secre- <br />tary of the Interior, made a tour of that area <br />to determine what should be dorie. Now the prob- I <br />lem arises in connection with Public Law 485 <br />which requires the Secretary to protect any <br />national monuments or parks which would, in part, <br />bepinundated by Glen Canyon or Lake Powell. <br />Actually, the waters from Glen Canyon would back <br />up. and under the .Rainbow Natural Bridge..
