The ongoing drought throughout the
state has necessitated some discussions regarding future surface and ground water use in all
three river basins. This project proposes to voluntarily retire a specific number of irrigated
acres of farmland in all three drainages for a period of up to fifteen years to address the
respective water shortages, improve water quality, and enhance wildlife habitat. The
Conservation Reserve Enhancement program (CREP) is a voluntary, incentive based program
administered through the United States Department of Agriculture that provides rental payments
and cost -share to retire cropland and establish permanent vegetation on the retired acres.
