Provide a brief description of your organization below: The Colorado Division of Wildlife is responsible for managing and enhancing habitat for over 700 species of wildlife within the state. The mission ofthe Colorado Division of Wildlife is to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the State of Colorado and provide people the opportunity to enjoy them. Protecting and enhancing partnerships with landowners, other agencies and organizations to accomplish multi-beneficial objectives, including wildlife, is and will continue to be a major focus of the Division. Part B. - Description of the Project or Study I. Name of the study or project: Colorado Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). This project proposes funding from CWCB to develop proposals and implementation plans for the three (3) CREP proposals. 2. What is the purpose of this grant application? Check one. Study Demonstration project. Rehabilitation or replacement of existing Other (Please describe) The grant will support a portion of an FTE supervised by CDOW. The FTE will provide expertise, collect data, write proposals, and provide specific monitoring protocol as required for the development and implementation of up to three CREP proposals that will improve water quality, reduce water consumption, and improve wildlife habitat in the Republican, Rio Grande, and South Platte River lA__=.. _ x 3. General location of the study or demonstration project. (please include county, and approximate distance and direction from the nearest town): The grant will encompass portions of three river basins (Republican, Rio Grande, South Platte) and may include Washington, Morgan, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Yuma, Kit Carson, Lincoln, Saguache, Alamosa, Rio Grande, and Conejos counties. See maps for specific locations. 4. Please provide a brief narrative description of the proposed study or demonstration project including purpose, need, and service area. (Attach scope of study, if available) Water is a scarce commodity in the three river basins. The ongoing drought throughout the state has necessitated some discussions regarding future surface and ground water use in all three river basins. This project proposes to voluntarily retire a specific number of irrigated acres of farmland in all three drainages for a period of up to fifteen years to address the respective water shortages, improve water quality, and enhance wildlife habitat. The Conservation Reserve Enhancement program (CREP) is a voluntary, incentive based program administered through the United States Department of Agriculture that provides rental payments and cost -share to retire cropland and establish permanent vegetation on the retired acres.
