481

- 26 -

UNITED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
GEOLDGICAL SURVEY

August 28, 1956

I

Mr. Ivan C. Crawford, Director
Colorado Water Conservation Board
212 State Office Building
Denver, Colorado

Dear Mr. Crawford:

In response to your recent request I am glad to furnish
you our suggestions for t0e construction of new gaging stations
during the current fiscal year and our estimates of funds
required for carrying on our cooperative surface water investi-
gations during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1958.

Mr. Gildersleeve and I have carefully reviewed the list of
18 new gaging stations requested by the Bure~u of Reclamation for
project investigations. We concluded that 12 of the proposed
stations are of sufficient importance to the State and to the
Geological Survey to be included in the cooperative program.
Of these, 4 can be constructed to replace stations to be
discontinued in our existing program. This leaves 8 stations to
be constructed with the special appropriation.

To construct these stations and operate them for the
remainder of the fiscal year we estimate the cost as $2,000
per station or a total of $16,000. Since they meet the criteria
for USGS cooperation, the cost to the Board would be half this
amount or $8,000. I respectfully suggest a supplemental cooperative
agreement for this amount.

During the fiscal year beginning next June 30 we will have
a total of 44 stations in the cooperative program. At an annual
operating cost of $800 per station per year the total cost of
this program will be $35,200, of which the Board's shar~ will
be $17,600. If approved by the Board this amount should be
included in your budget for the next fiscal year.

Very truly yours,

I

.

Francis M. BellIs

Francis M. Bell
District Engineer
