STAPLETON:

'"''

"A letter from the Bureau assuring
us the project will be advanced in time
is necessary before we can authorize
cooperative expenditures. If the pro-
posed contract comes in late, although
I am making every effort to push. it
through before I leave, should not Mr.
Gildersleeve have the power, in my ab-
sence, to sign for the State? I would
like a motion that the Board delegate
that authority to him in my absence."

"I would go even further than that -
wouldn't it be more helpful to have
Mr. Gildersleeve be acting Director
during your absence?"

"I should like to move that Mr. Gil-
dersleeve be acting Director during my
absence."

"I second the motion."

The motion was passed unanimously upon vote.

MR. Reports are being sent out all
the time but they are only in the prelimi-
nary stage and are not yet ready for pub-
lication. By going to the Survey offices,
State officials can see the data available
without waiting for the printed report.

I want to call your attention to
some bills which are now before Congress
to create a National Wilderness Preserva-
tion Council. I sent the following letter
to each of our Congressional Delegation
regarding these bills:
