726

He spoke of the cooperation studies with the
Bureau of Reclamation for which the last Legislature appro-
priated ;1;77,000.

Mr. Lew Williams asked about the Animas-La Plata I
Project. He said that $20,000 had been promised by the
State for this study and that if that money, together with . .
about ~6,000 raised by local contribution, could be used,
the Bureau of Indian Affairs would contribute 21% of this
amount, or 35,460 making a sub-total of ~31,460; then in turn
if the Bureau of Reclamation would match this $26,000, the
Bureau of Indian Affairs would contribute another 21"'0 of
this amount, giving another sub-total of $31,460, or a grand
total of $62,920 to be used on the Animas-La Plata Project
provided that ~20,000 promised from the State fs available.
This would finance almost a year's, about eight months,
work on that project.

Dean Crawford assured Mr. Williams there was no
question about getting the money from the State provided
it is shown that such funds will advance the date of com-
pletion of the studies.

r'lR. ~'IOSES:

"The Resolution in the minutes of the
last meeting said, beginning at the bot-
tom of page 7:

'That this Board authorize the ex-
penditure of a sum not to ex~eed $20,000
for the purpose of expediting studies
on the Animas-La Plata Project, if the
Director determines that the use of such
funds will materially expedite the
studies without interfering with the
established project priorities.

In the event such findings are
made, the Director is hereby authorized
to cooperate and contract with the U.S.
Bureau of Reclamation or the Southwestern
Conservancy District or both, in the
utilization of the funds.'

I

We have expended funds appropriated
by the Legislature when the Bureau of
Reclamation has told us that such ex-
penditures would secure a report on a
project at an earlier date, materially
advance the report in respect to time,
than would otherwise be the case."
