As the demands of both industry and agriculture in- <br /> <br />crease, the use of water for fish production and fishing recreation are <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />diminished. In the State of Colorado, we nOH have many miles of streams <br /> <br />.' <br />, <br />, <br />. <br />~ <br /> <br />which are severely damaged by chronic pollution from industries. <br /> <br />. In the high mountain streams I 1-112 no't.J' have pollution from mines and <br /> <br />mills processing lead, zinc, gold, silver and other metals. The demand for <br /> <br />these metals, especially silver, has resulted in new interest and activity <br /> <br />1 <br />J <br /> <br />among silver interests to open some of the old mines which have been inact- <br /> <br />ive for many years. In a number of these areas, the streams have recovered <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />from past damage and nO'1 support a fine fishery. It is the concern of the <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />Colorado Game, Fish and Parks Department to maintain these areas and prevent <br /> <br />their destruction by future pollutants. <br /> <br />Existing and operating mills are currently polluting many miles of <br /> <br />streams, and we have been annlY7.ing these wnters to determine the extent of <br />
