time there was a wild area which was a smaller wilderness area and then
a wilderness area which was a large wild area, if you follow me.

Mr. Stapleton: No, I don't think anybody did.

Mr. Hauk: But at the present time all of the primitive areas that were I
formerly designated in years gone by were to be studied under the pro-
cedures outlined in the Wilderness Act to be reclassified as wilderness.
There will be no more primitive or wild areas.

Mr. Moses: Same restrictions that apply to a primitive area as to a
wilderness?

Mr. Hauk: No roads, no development. In fact, we can't get approval
now to use a power saw in the Flat Tops area to cut down the dead timber,
the dead spruce, that is dropping across the trails. Some of those are
big ones. These are some of the restrictions.

Mr. Stapleton: As I understand that map, the green was the wilderness
area prior to this Senate Bill, is that correct?

Mr. Hauk: That is correct.

Mr. Stapleton: And that is approximately 140,000 acres, I understand.

Mr. Hauk: You will notice quite a few different figures because when
the original primitive area was set up, all we could do at that time
was outline the primitive boundaries. When this proposal went into
Congress through the Secretary of Agriculture and the President, the
area that we recommended be classified as a wilderness totaled around
142,000 acres and that pretty much shows on the green area. In other
words, that green area was taken from one of the maps that was in this
booklet. We gave the reasons why we didn't recommend certain areas
and$hy we wanted to include other areas.

Mr. Ford:
you either
areas?

You say they are to be reclassified as wilderness. Didn't
classify that a wilderness or ,declassify these primitive

Mr. Hauk: Excuse me, I should say. I guess it is because I have been I
through this quite a bit in my career and once it gets into a primitive
area. . .

Mr. Ford: I have been fighting through that for quite a while.

-28-
