I

I

1059

gOEY

THE CONSOLIDATED DITCHES COMPANY

of
Water District No. 2
Brighton, Colorado

July 16, 1958

Members of the Colorado Water Conservation
Board
State Capitol Building
Denver, Colorado

Gentlemen:

Information has been received by the water users of Water
District No. 2 that the Colorado Water Conservation Board at its
meeting in Durango on July 18, will consider and discuss the opera-
tion of the Cherry Creek dam as a recreation area.

Before your board takes action on the question of creating
a recreation area and maintaining a water conservation pool at the
Cherry Creek dam, certain studies should be made to determine if
the maintenance of a high water line or a gauge height in the
reservoir will rob the river of stream flow.

We are informed that water presently impounded in the re-
servoir was retained during a period of unusual precipitation and
stream flow. It was retained when the downstream water priorities
did not need, or call for, the water.

To maintain a water level in such a basin will require a
source of water to replace evaporative losses. If the stream flow
is used for replacement purposes, the downstream water users with
priorities will suffer.

On behalf of the water users in Water District No.2, I
now request the Colorado Water Conservation Board:

1. To postpone action until your board determines that
no water users will be injured by creating a water recreation area.

2. To studr the flow of water in Cherry Creek.

3. To study and ascertain the evaporative loss from such
a reservoir at that elevation.

4. To determine how much, if any, of the Cherry Creek
stream flow will be required to replace evaporative losses.
