irrigation season on approximately 11,450 acres in Grand
Valley and lower Gunnison basin areas.

B. Purpose of IMS is to optimize water management to improve
efficiency of water use and thereby reduce salt loading from
irrigation lands.

C. Five basins, tributary directly or indirectly to the Colorado I
River, categorized as major salinity contributors to river
from diffuse sources. One of these basins is McElmo Creek
located in Montezuma Valley in southwestern Colorado.

D. Initial efforts being directed towards locating areas of
greatest salt loading. Involves data collection and analysis,
research into land and channel process by which salt loading
takes place and evaluation of means of disposing of selectively
withdrawn waters.

E. Further studies will be made to determine if other methods
such as WSI and IMS would be effective in reducing salt
loading within the basin.

F. Negotiations essentially completed to extend contract with
agricultural research service through June 1977.

1. Contract is joint effort covering research on methods of
alleviating salt load in irrigation water return flow
within Colorado River Basin.

2. Extension of contract is essential to attain objectives
and" provide-Bureau with" requisite' supporting technolggy
and data to better implement IMS and WSI in Grand Valley
and elsewhere.

3. Bureau's share of extension through June 1977 - $204,722.

Dominguez Reservoir and Uncompahgre Improvement Projects

A. Multiobjective planning teams have been organized. Studies
have been initiated collecting resource inventory data and
problem and needs of area.

B. Public meetings being held. Proposed feasibility reports
scheduled for September 1977 and December 1976, respectively.

Upper Colorado Resource Study

A. Feasibility investigations scheduled to be initiated in FY
1976. Proposed feasibility report scheduled January 1977.

B. Study envisioned as comprehensive investigation of development
plans primarily of water resources of White and Yampa Rivers.

I

-6-
