18

If the program is as successful as water officials expect, 895 acre feet of water could be saved - .
enough to meet the needs of 1500 Denver area families for a normal (non-drought) year.

The Board also approved a number of programs designed to encourage water savings among
conunercial and industrial customers including vouchers for purchasing devices that reduce the
amount of water used for industrial cooling. And, the water department will purchase 100 additional
Permalog leak detection devices to be installed on water lines throughout Denver Water's distribution
system. The devices will help detect four to six times more leaks before they erupt into water main
breaks.

Every major municipal water provider on the Front Ra\1ge is taking similar steps.

Applications and more information are available by calling Denver Water at 303-893-2444 or visiting
the web site, www.denverwater.org.

Denver's Water Restrictions: As of October 2002, Denver has imposed the following water
restrictions:

1. All municipalities
have reached the limits of their voluntary conservation programs and are imposing similar water
restrictions.

Rio Grande B,asin Issues

Rio Grande Decision Support System: Development of the Rio Grande Decision Support System
(RGDSS) is in the final phase of a three-year, $4,960,000 effort. Most of the tools and models for
RGDSS have been completed or are near completion. The majority of the work remaining involves .
modeling tasks associated with the ground water model. Once the ground water model is complete,
revised return flow results will be used to update the surface water model for the Rio Grande.
