I

I

drainage, 6,000 acre-feet for the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe,
and 26,500 acre-feet for the Southern ute Indian Tribe.

project benefits will include the provision of water for
irrigation, for municipal and industrial water use, and for fish,
wildlife, and recreational uses. Additionally, annual area
redevelopment benefits will result from the employment of Indians
during construction and for the operation and maintenance of
project facilities.

The project will also address other problems that confront
the Indian reservations in the project area. In Colorado, both
the Southern ute and ute Mountain Ute Tribes have substantial
acreages of land which can be irrigated with project water.
Also, both reservations contain significant coal deposits which
can be converted into other forms of energy if water supplies can
be made available. Other components of the project would serve
Indian populations in Colorado and New Mexico with municipal
and/or domestic water.

In short, the project will protect and develop the state's

water resources, protect and preserve the public health, safety,

and welfare, and improve the economic well-being of Coloradans.

-3-
