e

"'",?"-,,,..,,'

e

drilling and testing program to be performed in the detailed phase of the geotechnical study. As a
result of this preliminary investigation, a proposed layout of exploratory borings (including depth
and method of sampling for each hole) will be'produced.

c. Detailed Investi~ations.

(1) Borings will be drilled at the locations of any proposed structures to defme the
foundation conditions. Additionally selected locations in the flood pool area and at potential
borrow sources may be necessary. All drilling and sampling will be performed in accordance with
EM 1110-2-1907. The purpose of the boring program will be to assess the following:

(a) The bearing and settlement characteristics at the locations of structures.
(b) The stability of cut slopes and levee slopes.
(c) The susceptibility of materials to scour.
(d) The seepage and ground water characteristics of the site.
(e) The nature of foundation 'material > '.',
(f) The suitability of materials for construction.

(2) The depth of borings along the proposed alignments will extend to a depth equal to
the height of the propos~d structure into the foundation material. The borings at sites of concrete
structures will be sufficiently deep (dependent on the structure) to define the foundation
characteristics. In-situ materials will be sampled for testing to include laboratory classification,
unit weight, moisture content, Atterberg limits, and grain size analysis. The majority of the
drilling will consist of standard penetration tests and split spoon samples. However, undisturbed
samples may be required if determined necessary, based on preliminary drilling results. All
borings will be bailed or pumped dry upon completion of drilling, and a 24-hour water table
reading will be made in each. All borings will be logged on ENG Form 1836 by an experienced
Government geologist or engineering technician. The duties of the geologist or technician will
include the following: ' " "

(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
(e)
(3)
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
.

Observing, classifying, and describing subsurface materials (ie., soil and
rock).
Selecting and preserving samples.
Logging and disposition of samples.
Completing the drilling log.
Recording information and data from in-situ tests.

The following information will be included on the boring logs:

Visual classification! description 'of subsurface materials.
All types of recovery used. '
Bail depth.
Water level reading taken after 24 hours.

SECTION B, PAGE 5
