If you don't mind, we will interupt and have him e~plain the coloring
and so forth, on the map.

Mr. Sparks: (Pointing on the map) The green portion of the map is
the existing primitive area. That has already been classified by the
Forest Service as.a primitive area. The yell~w portion is that
portion included now in the proposed boundaries of the Wilderness
area by S. 702. That is about it.

Mr. Stapleton: Mr. Sparks, what are the cross hatches?

I

Mr. Sparks: The cross hatched area was in the original Forest Service
proposal for the Wilderness area. These areas outside of that
hatched area are areas which were recommended by environmental orga-
nizations and by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. and were then
included in the present bill. There are other areas here which have
been recommended for inclusion by environmental agencies, but which
are not included in the present bill. They are still pending.
Whether or not they are going to be added by the Congress remains to
be seen.

Mr. Kroeqer: Larry, would you outline the various drainages that are
involved and locate those in relation to the community and what not?

Mr. Sparks: (Pointing on,the map again) This is the area we are
talking about here which is in controversy. ~his is the South Fork
of the White River which heads up in this area, it flows southerly
and then generally westerly, joining the White River down in the
valley. This is the North Fork of the White River, the northern
boundary, and then the Marvine Creek area. Down at this point, the
tributaries join together to form the White River. Most bf the pro-
posed Wilderness area is in the White River drainage, but part of it
is in the Colorado River drain~ge.

Mr. Stapleton: Can you identify the area that you say, with.B further
recommendation that the Meadows area of the South Fork of the White
River be included within the boundaries of the proposed Wilderness
area?

Mr. Sparks: (Again pointing on map) This is the Meadows area in the I
headwaters of the South Fork of the White. River. This has been
excluded in the present bill. The staff has recommended that this
line be drawn straight across here so that all of the South Fork of
the White River is included within the Wilderness area. The rest of
the South Fork down to this point is included in the Wilderness area.
We thoUght it was a bit strange that a portion of it was left out.

-l6-
