MR. STAPLETON: Am I correct in interpreting that,' that rather than
having a hearing of any kind, we can adopt 'a staff position, but if we'
want to, we could give the sides an opportunity .to make an informal
presentation of their views?

MR. MacFARLANE: That is correct.

MR. STAPLETON: All right, I think all the participants in the great
battle are still here. And you will all take note of that, will you
please?

All right, Pete Barrows has an announcement and presentation he wants to
make. Pete, would you come up, please?

MR. BARROWS: Our director would have liked to have been here today;
however, the Legislature would not like him to be here. He has other
things that he is confronted with right now.

Larry and I go back a long way together.

We tried to think of something that was appropriate to give Larry, and
this is rather difficult. So all his friends, that is, me and Rex, got
together and came up with what we thought might be a symbol of Larry.
(Laughter.) And rather than wait until the Commission meeting, which
we understand we may not have a Commission by that time, we thought we
had better give it to him tOday.

NOW, there is no Division of wildlife money involved in this. (Laughter.)
It's a personal, gift. It's from the "Division of Money Management."
(Laughter and Applause.)

In keeping with sticking to the facts, I went to a journal of mamma logy,
and since Larry also has another name, Felix, the family of cats is the
family of felines,. and part of the description is: color of body--
uniform, striped, or spotted. That is kind of typical of Larry.
(Laughter.) Weight--over 100 pounds: mountain lions, cougars, and
panther, puma.

"The mOuntain lion is never calm." We felt that applied.
