I

I

Missouri River Basin activities. It is presently programmed in the
reclamation program, but we are in touch with various interests around
the Cache la poudre. And I think it is just a matter that, if there is
enough interest by different parties, we will be able to get it in the
program and evaluate it.

Now, as far as this Cache la poudre wild and scenic river study,
identify what I consider some real good opportunities for mutual
to the wild and scenic interests and the development - interests..
I think there's an area there that must be pursued.

we did
benefit
And

MR. FETCHER: I keep hearing over in my area that there is a restudy of
Narrows being made. Is this true or not? Would you explain?

MR. NELSON: Well, there isn't a restudy scheduled now, as far as I
know. I think that is on our agenda--the number of things that are
being considered for potential study. We haven't programmed anything
for this time.

MR. STAPLETON: Any further questions? (NO response.)

Thank you very much.

Darrell Mach, from the Southwest Region, would you like to give us your
report, please?

MR. MACH: The only project we have in the state of Colorado in the
Southwest Region out of Amarillo, Texas, is the Closed Basin of the San
Luis Project. Our Regional Director has asked me to come here today to
brief you on what our status of that particular project is and to bring
you up to date through our last-minute standings as far as our progress
is concerned.

I have a map here on the wall which is a rather roughly drawn map, but
it is about the only one we have right, now. We are right in the middle
of preparing our final reports and documents on the Closed Basin Proj-
ect, so most everything is in what we call a "draft stage."

Very quickly, we have the Rio Grande running down through here (indicat-
ing), and the Closed Basin Project consists of originally a five-stage
well field stretching up through this area here (indicating) to deliver
approximately 100,000 acre-feet of water to the Rio Grande River for
basically two purposes--the first being to help the state of Colorado
meet its Compact commitments under the Rio Grande compact and, secondly,
to help Colorado also payoff its alleged indebtedness under that
compact.

The project was originally authorized in 1972, and it was only recently
that we were given funds to begin what we call "preconstruction plan.-._
ning." The original studies that were done for this particular project
were done in fairly sketchy detail, and so we are now trying to refine
these data and trying to bring them up to date so that we can come out
with a final design and initiate construction.

-9-
