The
flow recommendations are a product of the instream flow assessment that the BLM has been
working on for the past three years. The recommended flows are presently available in the
river and will not impact any existing water rights from the river. The recommended flows are
to protect the river's fishery but will also provide benefits to riparian vegetation and minimize
impacts from river ice formation and ice flows that occur in the river during the winter
months.
As you well know, protecting river flows is important to maintain the river ecosystems
which include aquatic and fish habitats and river riparian zones.
I am a property owner that relies on the quality of the river's flow for my family's
drinking water. As important, I am currently working, as a member of the San Miguel County
Recreation District on a project that seeks to protect, restore and enhance the river's health,
through the Applebaugh Park Wetlands Re-creation project. Several other valuable and
important projects currently exist to enhance some aspect of the health of the river's
ecosystem. The weak link in all of these efforts, of course, is the lack of adequate instream flow
protection on the river.
Please consider the BlM and DOW's recommendation carefully. The river's ecosystem
depends on your course of <lStion Clnd future generations of river advocates will be thankful.

1:"'" .' . .

.' ~ranYi, PlacerValley f-jq.meownerAssocr. m.ember, San Miguel County Recreation
District boardmember

".',

-,:.'

".'-

, .-,'

';0'

-
