SUBJECT: Report of Bureau of Reclamation on Cheney Division,
Wichita Project, Ninnescah River Basin Kansas,
dated February 1957.

Under date of May 23, 1958, the Commissioner of
Reclamation, in behalf of the Secreaty of the Interior, trans-
mitted the subject report to the Colorado Water Conservation
Board, for the views and recommendations of the State of Colo-
rado in accordance with the provisions of Section l(c) of the
Flood Control Act of December 22, 1944. Such comments thereon
are due within ninety days following receipt of the letter of
transmittal.

The plan of development for the Cheney Division of
the Wichita Project contemplates, as a Federal project, the
construction of Cheney dam, reservoir and related recreational
facilities and the purchase of wildlife management program
lands.

A portion of the capacity of the reservoir would pro-
vide urgently needed municipal and industrial water to the City
of Wichita to supplement its existing ground water supply. The
City contributed $50,000 toward project investigation costs.

The Cheney dam site is located on the North Fork of
the Ninnescah River, about 24 miles west of Wichita. The reser-
voir would have a controlled capacity of 242,800 acre feet
allocated as follows:

(a) Municipal Water Supply
(b) Flood Control
(c) Fish and Wildlife Conservation
(d) 100 years Sediment Deposition
