',~

'~
.

.

.

two web sites on the internet: (1) the CWRRI home page that describes the water-related
activities, water expertise, water research results and water educational programs of
Colorado's universities in detail: http://CW1Ti,colostate,edu and (2) the Colorado Water
Knowledge home page that provides the public with basic information about Colorado's
water resources: http://waterknowledge,colostate,edu. The Water Knowledge home page
was listed by the Denver Rocky Mountain News on January 10, 2000, as one ofthe top
100 web sites in Colorado.

As noted above, in November 1999, CWRRI received the results of the national,
peer review evaluation of the entire national water institute program (required every five
years by federal act) conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Geological Survey.
CWRRI was designated one of four 'exceptional programs' during the 1999 review.
Among the Evaluation Panel's comments regarding CWRRI were the following:

"The Colorado Institute is not large in terms of over-all financial support. Its
program is truly a model of how a smaller institute without access to discretionary
or extramural funds ought to function. The Institute's program is clearly defined
and well focused on the development of synthesized information and the
dissemination of that information to water users and managers throughout
Colorado."

This recognition of CWRRI's efficient use of its limited funding in establishing
close and effective working relationships with Colorado's water users and managers is
most welcomed by all those associated with CWRRl

In summary, CWRRI provides a connection between higher education's water
expertise and the water research needs of Colorado's water users and managers. CWRRI
must not rest on its laurels, but must continue to seek ways to do more with less in its
central office while seeking additional funding for faculty to conduct much needed water
research and education programs.
