I

This pretty much then is where we are in our progression on the Rio
Grande River Bas~n study. :

Okay, on the Arkansas we have received as of December an advisory from
our Washington office granting us the authority to go ahead and start
charging our time and putting forth effort on the Arkansas River Basin
study.

We will b~ in about May holding public meetings -in tbS Arkansas Basin.
The purpose of-these meetings will be to identify again problems that:
the local people perceive that they have and that they would like for
us to look at to determine what solutions could be brought up on these
problems.

Some of the areas in which we have preliminarily looked at have
indicated that, of course, there are problems with the irrigation in
the Arkansas Valley. There are municipal and industrial water shortages
that we'll be looking at, primarily in the:Co1orado Springs - Pueblo:
area, and also a lot of the Valley towns and smaller communities in the
area. .

We will also be looking at the water quality problems, with particular
emphasis on mine drainage. Headwaters of the Arkansas Basin will be
where . these primary problems are located, :and some will be located
beloW the Pueblo area. --

In addition, we will be looking at flood control problems in the: Basin.
The Fountain Creek area would be one that we have preliminarily iden-
tified. Of course, another problem that we are always interested in
and hope to solve in some way is the erosion and sediment problem, and
I think one that probably will be a significant problem in the Arkansas
Basin.

I

In addition, of course, we'll be looking at the recreation, fish and
wildlife,. and any other water-related problems. After we have our
public meetings in-May, probably, we will be sitting down in the month
of June and we will prepare a work plan in which we will spell out the
activities we will be invo1ved~in ~ooking at. the Basin's problems and iden-
tifying potential. solutions,:andthose willbe:our primary activities
in the coming months then on the Arkansas Basin. .

Thank_you, Mr. Chairman.

MR. STAPLETON: Thank you, Mr. Glasgow. Do any members of the Board:
have any questions of Mr. Glasgow? (No response.) Thank you very much.
We appreciate it.

I meant to introduce: Don Myers who.most of you know, who is .proxy for
John Brownell. . Nice to have you with .us. . . .

Bill Nelson, a long-time member.of our Board from Grand Junctio~ is
here. Bill, we're glad to have you with: the Board again.:

MR.: VALDEZ: :Mr. Stapleton; I realize that, you've already made the

-19-
