The Flood Insurance Rate Map for Walden contains approximate floodplain delineations for the
Michigan River and Illinois River within the town limits.

. CWCB staff has provided detailed hydrologic information by performing flood frequency analyses
using streamflow gaging station records from the two rivers. The CWCB staff has also drafted a new
Floodplain Information Report (FIR, dated February 1999) that provides engineering and regulatory
information that supplements Walden's FEMA map.

. The Town of Walden has not experienced major damages caused by flooding from either of the two
rivers that border the community, and feels that the approximate floodplain delineations seem to be
appropriate.

COMMUNITY RESPONSE:
CWCR staff has been in contact with Walden's floodplain administrator by telephone on

sMeverahlsoclC399s9ions to dtin~cusds ~he flti~odPflatinh .desfligndatil.o~ ~r&ocess.ti TheTshenTt a letter, datetd e
arc, , reques g eSlgna on 0 elr 00 p am IDIOrma on. e own appears 0
be supportive of the designation, but a meeting has not been held between ewCR staff and
the Town. CWCR staff will meet with Walden officials in the future, if the Town so desires.

SUMMARY:
The staff recommends that the Board designate and approve the resolution for the Town of Walden
based on a letter of request received from the community. Based on telephone conversations with
Town staff, the community appears to be supportive of the proposed designation, and there do not
seem to be any major concerns regarding the floodplain map or flood issues. The resolution will
assure that the town's most current floodplain information complies with state statutory
requirements.

12

e
