Funding is to cover 40% of the cost of a Water Management Plan for the Upper Gunnison River
basin, being completed under USBR guidance. The Study, Report will provide altematives and cost .
estimates for development of water resources in the Upper Gunnison basin. The report will include
reservoir reconnaissance and other potential raw water projects (canals, pipelines, and diversions.)

The District has expended all of the $20,000 CWCB funding, and the study draft is being prepared.
Total study cost was $50,000. .

9.

San Luis Valley Resource and Development Agency
Authorization: Long Bill
Water Source: N/A
Location: In and around Creede

GrantAmount: $15,000
Type: Stream stability & hydraulic study
Project Manager: Brian Hyde

In combination with FEMA's Project Impact, the C/NCB is funding a study of the Willow Creek
watershed immediately upstream of the Corps of Engineers flood control flume in the City of Creede.
The study will determine through a hydraulic analysis wh~ther a 100-year flow on Willow Creek will
enter the flume, or whether part ofthe flow will overflow. In addition, potential problem areas upstream
of Creede, including two mine sites will be examined for hydraulic adequacy. The study will also look at
the geologic stability of the watershed (as distinguished from the stream channel) to determine whether
mine debris or geologic material might affect the stream's hydraulic capacity. The study will be
completed, using the FEMA funding, during the fall of 2002.

10.

Education Kiosk
Authorization: Long Bill

Grant Amount: $25,000
Project Manager: Dan McAuliffe

The Board hired Emmett Jordan, the producer of its' water education CD and several other water
education tools, to help assemble an educational Kiosk for'the State Fair, our meetings and other venues.
The Kiosk is an interactive video display with accompa1jying materials regarding: where water comes
from (climate and weather); how water is stored and c01}veyed for use; uses of water; backgrouud on
CWCB and its programs; highlights about CWCB role iIj financing projects to meet current and future
needs.

11.

North Fork River Improvement Association
Authorization: Long Bill
Water Source: N/A
Location: North Fork Gunnison River near Paonia

Grant Amount: $50,000
Type: Stream stability imp.
Project Manager: Brian Hyde

This project will produce a final design for river ~tability improvements for a 3 - 4 mile reach of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River between Paonia ~d Hotchkiss. The specific project reach lies
within a 15-mile reach of the North Fork, starting upsteam of Paonia and extending downstream of
Hotchkiss, which has experienced severe instability problems. The project will be the second
demonstration project along that unstable reach, with tIle first having been completed near Hotchkiss.
The field surveys and topographic mapping have been, completed, final engineering design has been
completed, and construction of the project finished. A PowerPoint presentation has been prepared as part
of the project to allow others to benefit from the design and construction lessons learned through this
effort. A part of the project involved the design and con~truction of an irrigation headgate facility that is
expected to avoid the problems caused by instability witbj more conventional headgate designs.

Page 28 00 I

.

.
