Utah's Contribution to Project Studies Cost

Dear Mr. Crawford:

Referring to conversations with you and
to your letter of March 28, 1955, the following
information is submitted with respect to the
use of funds contributed in the past to the
Bureau of Reclamation by the State of Utah.

Certain investigations were carried on
by the Bureau under cooperative contracts with
the Utah Water Storage Commission from 1922 to
1938, with the State Department of Publicity
and Industrial Development from 1939 to 1946,
and with the Utah Water and Power Board from
1947 to date--each agency representing the
state on water matters under a state law pre-
vailing for the periods indicated.

Under the cooperative contracts the
investigation of many potential and multiple-
purpose projects was speeded up by reason of
these state agencies advancing funds generally
in the amount of 50 percent (and sometimes
more) of the cost. These cooperative investi-
gations lead specifically to the construction
of the Weber River, Hyrum, Ogden River, Moon
Lake, Sanpete, Provo River, Newton, and Weber
Basin projects.

Although we have not made a detailed check,
we estimate that more than $800,000 was spent
under these cooperative programs, of which
$369,886 was advanced by the State of Utah.
Along with these state funds $7,080 was ad-
vanced by the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce
and others and $14,767 by the Strawberry Water
Users Association, Weber Basin Conservancy District,
Davis County, and the Ogden River Water Users
