583

ADDENDUM TO 1957-58 BUDGET

In a recent conference Governor-Elect Stephen L. R.
McNichols expressed the opinion that if our proposed
budget for the year 1957-58 did not provide adequately
for the prosecution of the Board's work, we should request
the additional funds necessary. Unquestionably we are
deficient in staff.

1

"

The importance of ground water studies fully warrant
the addition of a qualified hydrologist and salaries must
be raised sufficiently to attract engineers to our two
staff vacancies.

I recommend the Board approve the following additions
to the budget already forwarded to the Controller's office:

(1). The creation of a new position of ground water
hydrologist at a salary of $8,500 per annum. This hydrologist
could be either a geologist or an engineer trained and
experienced in this branch of hydrology.
Increase in budget. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $8,500.

(2). Increase the annual salary for the P-5 ,position
now vacant from $7,200 a year to $8,500. Diligent search
has been made for a competent man for the position; how-
ever the Civil Service requirement of 8 years professional
experience for a starting salary of $574.00 per month is
too high. The result - no qualified persons are interested.
Increase in budget. . . . . . .. ..... 1,300.

(3). Increase the salary for the P-2 position in
the budget from $4,800 to $5,500 per year, with a re-
quirement of 2 years professional experience instead of
the 5 years now required. Many graduate engineers now enter
industry at $4,800 per year. Increase the budget. . $ 700.

(4). Increase the salaries of the present engineer-
ing staff proportionately to the-salary recommended above
for the P-6 position. Increase the budget. . . . . . . 3,700.

(5). In order to provide for in-state travel and
subsistence of the ground water hydrologist and more
engineering work in the field, it is recommended that the
in-state travel and subsistence items be increased by
$2,000. Increase the budget. . . . . . . . . . .. 2,000.

(5). Equipment - maps, books for hydrologist
Increase in budget. . . . . $1,000 . . .

I

1,000.

(7). Total addition to proposed 1957-58 Budget$17,lOO.
