565

MR. PETERSON:

MR. CRAWFORD:

MR. MOSES:

MR. CRAWFORD:

MR. PETERSON:

MR. KELLY:

was pledged to the U. S. Geological Sur-
vey, Surface Water Division, to make
studies on water supplies of proposed pro-
jects on the Western Slope. At our last
meeting I was authorized to go: into a con-
tract or get information as to whether we
should go into a contract to make a coop-
erative topographical survey. To do this
will take something in the neighborhood
of $55,000 which leaves only $12,000. By
having some funds available we may be able
to accelerate the completion of these
studies. That is the reason why I have
asked for $150,OOO instead of $100,000,
which might be used, say, $50,000 in the
Dolores are~, $50,000 on Yampa-White Basin
and $50,000 in the Colorado Basin, pro~
v'rled it is found that studies 'in these
areas can be accelerated."

1

"Have you had any indication from the
Bureau of Reclamation that they can use
that money - that much?"

"No, not for sure. I didn'~ have any
indication they could use the available
$55,000 until a few weeks ago."

"I am sure we all understand that
this money is to expedite these projects."

"The great 'advantage to that is that
they are able to go ahead if they have
some idea as to what the State:will do."

"Our experience on the Western Slope
has proved to us that these projects, when
delayed, have proven very expensive to
the State of Colorado. There are some
projects which are so critical that unless
taken care of quickly will cause parts of
the State to cease to be communities. Any
delay would be 'penny wise and dollar fool-
ish'. I therefore would like to move that
the Director be authorized, with our sup-
port, to request of the Legislature that
will be in Session next January, that the
sum of $150,000 be appropriated for inves-
tigation of participating projects on the
Western Slope of' Colorado on a cooperative
program with the Bureau of Reclamation."

1

"Second the motion."
