I

I

NR. ~TAPLETON:

NR. ECKLES:

~~JI

June 16th flood hit Denver we were in the
process of enlarging on our studies for~major
protection of metropolitan Denver. As we a:J.l
know, Chatfield Dam will be the key to this '
protection for metropolitan Denver.

We have in our planning also protectio~
on Bear Creek; protection of the Upper plum
Creek Basin; and channel improvements through
Denver on the South Platte; as well as protec-
tion on Sand Creek and Clear Creek.

That's about the summation of my enlarge-
ment on what we have in the formal report to
this Board. I will wait until later to answer
any questions."

"Thank you, Joe.

I think ",e might next call on Nr. Richard
E~~les, who has been active with the Governor
in these flood control matters and he may have
some report and comments at this time, before
we call on the Director. Nr. Eckles."

"Nell, as you know Hr. Chairman, there has
been a crash program as far as the inventories
of damage dawn both of these drainages. Indi-
cative of the problem I had a meeting Friday
with General l'lalker and the estimates, the
needs, and the costs, are still spiralling as
each day goes by. As far as the Governor's
office is concerned, we are well aware of the
fact that many of these losses at this time
are still general estimates. Devastation in
both of these drainages is an unbelievable
thing.

The planning of both the Bureau and the
Corps is a very necessary thing. In the mean-
time, with the inventory of the losses along
with the finalization of the study by both of
these agencies, in the near future I am in
hopes of the fact that we will be able to
finalize a plan not only for the South platte
but also t.he Arkansas."
