taken during the past winter. All of these pictures. were taken on land
which is irrigated. Those deer are just not socializing, they are eating.
These ~ere t~ken around Meeker and some were taken' in the Fruitland Mesa
area. This pasture l~nd.is'9ne of their favorite spots.: Here are the
deer. A.. lot of people say that once you .build a farm. y:ou .run the game
off. As a matter of fact, you practically: have to run. over them to get
them out of your way .in many. cases. During.,the wintertime, they come
on the farms and the farmers .will actually feed many of them. . .

These pictures show them on agricultural farm land. As you can see,
they adjust to civilization quite easily. They are not easily fright-
ened off, particularly if they are hungry. I have seen them in my years
over here:many times. driving between Delta: and Gunnison. I have' seen
farmers. on the. Blue Mesa and nearSapinero throwing them.hay. The
Division of Wildlife says that hay kills them but they look pretty fat
to me after they eat it. This is a bunch of elk up in an orchard. For
every. acre of farmland, the complaint..is. that we ruin it. for deer' habitat
or elk or whatever. Every rancher knows better than that because they
graze on the meadows quite extensively, partucularly.in the winter
months, but also during the spring and sununer.in many cases also.

I

I ~ . . .

The irony of the whole thing is that: the. report says that if you take
5,0,00 Jacres..for the Savery-Pot Hook, then 5,QOO acres of: land. are taken
out of natural habitat. It's already intermittent land with farm units
that are operating. They say that it will ruin it for the deer and the
antelope. On the other hand, their.request that we put up a.lot of
money to keep the deer and t~e antelope out:o~.the farms--they put up
stockades to protect the farmers and the Division of wildlife has to
pay damages. So on the one hand they say we are dri~ing them out and
on the other hand inviting them in. I wish the hell they.would make up
their minds.

MR. STAPLETON: Is there anything we need to discuss further about the
next day and a half's program? All right then, Ifwe, don't'seethe.
memb.ersof the Board before.. 7 :30 tomorrow, I would like .to have us all
sit together ,and be a functional.Board after this/meeting.

MR. FURNEAUX: Why don't we try to get together about 6:30 and have
breakfast together or

MR. STAPLETON: I had lunch here. I don't know about 6:30, whether you
can have breakfast or not. I wonder if we could go. to the ,'Ramada? .

I

MR. SPARKS: That is going to be a madhouse.

MR. STAPLETON:
See if we can't
Mary, I am sure

Well, Mary has a great way of'getting these things done.
have a.. table 'at6:30 tomorrow morning 'for the BOard. ",'
that you can handle that.

-26-
