MR. STAPLETON: I would also like to emphasize that we have made some
accommodations over the years, and I get the feeling from the environ-
mentalist friends that we are as rigid as they are..but think they are
not. I think we ought to have the people that review these continually
be aware that we have tried to be more reasonable about those considera-
tions.

MR. JACKSON:
deleted some
that basis.

I think that is important". Mr. Chairman. and we have
of these things from quite a few of the projects on just

I

MR. STAPLETON: The maker of the motion having consented. and you being
the second, I think we will appoint you and I will. join with you.

MR. SPARKS: I might state on that point that the Colorado General
Assembly enacted a very strong resolution to support these projects.
It will be introduced by the Governor tomorrow morning in the hearings.
These resolutions support. these projects very strongly. There were only
two dissenting votes in the Colorado General Assembly.. one in .the House
and one in the Senate. So it passed. let's say. with an overwhelming
majority. I have some copies with me.

MR. STAPLETON: Would the Board agree that Mr..
put some language into the motion? All right.
will somebody call the question?

Jackson and I could maybe
with that understanding.

MR. JACKSON: I will.

MR. STAPLETON: The question having been called. all those in favor
signify by saying "aye."

THE BOARD: Aye.

MR. STAPLETON: Those opposed.

(NO response.) Carried unanimously.

All right. Bill Nelson of the Grand Junction Sentinel has sort of been
on vacation the last few days. but he is here and I paid 35 cents to
buy his Sunday edition and read it. I was amazed of the breadth of the
controyersy even on their own pages. He is a former member of the Board.
and we are glad to be in your territory again.

CHAIRMAN STAPLETON:
who is now .a member
here.

I see Mr.. Berthelson. another member of the Board.
,of the Upper Colorado River Commission. is also

I

MR. NELSON: Thank you.

Well. that is the agenda item. What we all came over for is to hear
the hearings tomorrow and Tuesday. I would like now to have some

-10-
