''>''r,

',' '. ~ "

,." .

APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR WEATHER
MODIFICATION ACTIVITIES (Continued)

an aid in determining the forecast of the amount
of precipitation that should be expected naturally.
Duration, rate of accumulation, and present condi-
tions are also used in making the decision to
operate a particular storm system or to suspend
operations.

Investigations have been made in regard to sil-
ver iodide introduced into the atmosphere being
hazardous to health. The following is a quote of
the full ABSTRACT from an article taken from the
Journal of Applied Meteorology, Vol. II, Decem-
.ber 1972:

, ~"

"Estimates based on information.in medical and
meteorological literature indicate that silver
iodide in the air and in precipitation does not
pose a danger to people in the target area. Al-
though the concentration of AgI near the genera-
tor is much larger, interviews with operators who
have been seeding on a large scale for many years
fail to disclose any instances of ill effects
from AgI."

Based on the experience of WRDC iu this area,
there will be no significant effects on-the envir-
onment because of cloudseeding.

G.At the present time we aren't aware of any other cOn-
templated weather modification projects in western
Colorado.

We are very willing' and would solicit complete coop-
eration with the operators of any weather modifica-
tion programs that may be established in Colorado.

H. The Grand Mesa cloudseeding program, which has been
operated by WRDC for many years, is designed to mini-
mize risk (see Item F above) and to maximize economic
benefits (see Items A and B above) for the people of
the Grand.Mesa area.
