Table 7 breaks down the monthly distribution of crop-hail
insurance claims for each liKWM county of the 1993 season; whereas,
Table 8, on the following page, shows the percentage of hail claims
occurring each month inside the WKWM target area counties compared
"Co what the entire State of Kansas received. Invariably, each year
we see the hail damage tendency of the WKvlIv! area parallels the
State's tendency and 1993 was no different. There were 14,813
claims in 1992 for all of Kansas and 24,954 in 1993, a 68.5%
increase year-to-year. Compare this to the WKWM target area's
1,890 claims in 1992 and 3991 claims in 1993---a 111% increase!
Earlier in this report reasons suggested for the large year-to-year
increase in claims were discussed. Just as rain is greatly variable
in the summer, so too is hail and we shouldn't expect a one-for-one
increase or decrease in hail claims in the WKWM area based solely
on damage changes experienced by the entire State. It's reasonable
to expect some increase in hail claims in the WKWM target area if
the State increases, or vice versa, but it's unreasonable "Co expect
a nearly identical increase or decrease based upon total State
damage claims. Among other factors, flooding, drought, cropping
patterns, late and early freezes as well as storm variability all
play roles across Kansas at differ.ent times and places.

TABLE 7

------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

MONTHLY CROP-HAIL INSURANCE CLAIMS

FOR WKWM COUNTIES - 1993

==;=====~==============~========~====================================
1993 APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP TOTA~

===============================~======================================

FINNEY 9 24 406 7 42 82 570
FORD 15 60 102 4 11 13 205
GRANT 0 132 150 8 119 10 419
GRAY 59 92 272 8 8 20 459
GREELEY 0 59 86 0 0 0 145
HAMILTON 0 14 293 0 8 51 366
HASKELL 1 15 200 7 149 85 457
KEARNY 0 18 128 44 33 64 287
LANE 0 0 102 10 0 9 121
SCOTT 0 4 179 61 30 28 302
STANTON 0 32 237 6 144 0 419
WALLACE 0 22 39 19 0 0 80
WICHITA 0 28 89 40 4 0 161

======================================================================

TOTALS:

84

500

2283

214

548

-362

3991

======================================================================

29
