JULY 16th - OPERATIONAl; DAY #32: An isolated thunderstorm began
forming west of Stanton County in late afternoon. Three cloud base
aircraft planes were initially scrambled at 4:30 p.m., however, two
were recalled before take-off due to the cloud collapsing in short
order; the third flight was terminated at 5 p.m.

At 5:55 p.m. another storm complex developed near SW Hamilton
and NW Stanton, just west of the state line. storm movements were
mostly east-northeast to northeast at this time. Three planes were
scrambled. Seeding began at 6:20 p.m. for rain increase, however,
increased updrafts required hail suppression to be be~un at 6:22
p.m. A second plane began seeding at 6:25 p.m., whereas, the third
aircraft was diverted to a new storm near Coolidge and at 6:.38 p.m.
beqan seeding in western and northwestern Hamilton County. The last
cloud base plane and the cloud top aircraft were both scrambled at
6:43 p.m.' as overall atarii1 developmentinoreasecl. The laat (;lcu~
base plane scrambled began seeding the north-western Hamilton
County cluster of storms along the Hamilton and Greeley County line
at 7; 17 p.m. as it elongated into a larger ENE-wSW line over
Greeley and Wichita counties.

At 6:58 p.m. one of the two planes in southern Hamilton count~
was diverted to the north to help the other two planes on the
developing line. The last plane in southern Hamilton flew to an
intensifying E-W line of storms across northern Finney/southern
Wichita/southern Scott counties where seeding began at 7:20 p.m.
This new line was in the process of merging with the ENE-WSW line
of storms in Greeley and Wichita counties. The cloud top aircraft
began seeding over soott County at 7:41 p.m. and extended seeding
into Wichita county along the line. Unfortunately, hail was bein~
ejecte~ out of the clouds in the line directly into the flight path
of the cloud top seeding plane and it was unable to work the line
after 7:55 p.m. It did perform some seeding further east in SCQtt
and Lane counties on isolated smaller storms and returned to its
base at 8:35 p.m. Seeding continued on the line of storms moving
northeastward through Wichita and Scott counties until 9:08 p.m. at
which time flight seeding tracks were well north of the county
J.inl?s. By thatimeseeding. ended, the radar systempro.blemswe had
this week resurfaced making impossible any accurate storm intensit~
measurements or echo area coverage. In retrospect it is likely
there was considerable hail produced in eastern Finney, eastern
Scott and western Lane counties while our radar was malfunctioning.

After seeding ended along the northern tier of counties one
plane was sent in to resupply and three others were brought to the
south side of enother NE-SW line of storms running from eastern
Finney County southwest across Gray, Raskell, Grant and Stanton. By
the time the aircraft had penetrated the line, havinQ had to fly
through moderate to sev~re turbulence and precipitation, the only
seeding which could be performed was performed over portions of
Haskell and Gray counties between 10:04 and 1Q:37 p.m. This line
was moving southeast thxough the southern part of the target area.
