aircraft was scrambled at 8:31 p.m. and began seeding at 9:20 p.m.
See~ing tor hatl continued into aast-central Hamilton and western
Kearny oounties then further southeast into southern Kearny and
northern Grant. As seeding was winding down in southern Grant
County, one airplane was diverted northward toward Wichita County
at 10:19 p.m.; the seQond and third left at 10:26 an~ 10:30 p.m.,
respectively. rhe fourth cloud base plane ended seeding at 10:48
p.m. and returned to its base for re-supply and fuel.

'l'he cloud top plane waa acrambled at 9:15 p.m. when a large
new multiple-celled storm complex was identified north of Wichita
County and moving southerly to southeasterly; it began seeding at
10:02 p.m., however, most new ~loud growth W4$ extremely close to
the main core of the storm in~hich large hail was being indicated.
on radar. ~hia happens when instability i19 very strong and ten de to
grossly inhibit cloud top seeding as it in this case. The Oloud top
aircraft then was sent to a new N-S oriented line of stormS which
lay along the eastern Haskell/western Gray County line at 11:35
p.m. Some seeding was done along the line from 11:47 p.m. to 12:08
a.m. before running out ot dry ice, however, there was no important
difference in storm characteristics from the previous aloud seeded.

Llle the cloud top aircraft, the three aloud base aircraft
which went to the Wichita/Scott complex from Grant County also all
had great difficulty finding updrafts despite the extremely high
intensity showing within the separate cores. Finally, at 11:15
p.m., a line of updrafts was encountered in southeAst Wichita and
southwest Scott counties into which all three cloud base planes
could seed. The other two planes joined at 11:20 and 11:34 p.m. In
retrospect, neither the Cloud top plane nor the cloud base planes
were able to seed this complex effectively while it passed across
most of WiChita and Soott counties. However, as the complex moved
to the southeast across northwest and northcentral Finney County
into northwest Gray, seeding position improved. The storm complex
continued to be seeded until the oloud bases fell apart and the
storm oOllapsed into lighter showers. All cloudb~e~ planes ended
seeding at 12:35 a.m. Total flight time was 29.2 hours.

AUGUST 9th - OPERATIONAL DAY #42: At 3:25 p.m. 4 nortbeasterly
mOVing, isolated severe storm built a few miles north of Bolly, CO,
necessitating scrambling all aircraft. However, while three cloud
base aircraft were en route to the storm, storm intensities began
pulsing, first falling, then rising again. The flight of the cloud
top plane was oancelled as was the flight of the fourth cloud base
plane. The storm was first seeded at 4:02 p.m. near Horace (Greeley
County) and the other two planes jOined in seeding at 4:12 and 4:17
p.m., raspectiVely. New storm growth built on the NW corner of the
Btorm as it moved northeasterly with seeding continuing into south-
east Wallace County. Seeding ended at 4:43 p.m. with no further
st;orm development afterward. All severe storms remained well north
of the target area the rest of the day. Total flight time this dai
was 4.2 hours.
