At 7:23 p.m. three planes were scrambled ~hen strong-appearing, new
cloud base updrafts were seen visually near Lakin. Two aircraft
seeded the storm to increase rainfall between 7:49 p.m. and 8:23
p.m. at which time both flights were terminated.

Ml\.Y 3rd. Q?ERATIONAL DAY #2: By 5:30 p.m. two separate severe
storms had built and moved to positions: (1) west of Holly, CO, and
(2) near Goodland. Two cloud base aircraft were scrambled at that
time, another at 6:12 p.m. and the cloud top plane at 6:l5 p.m.
The last cloud base plane was requested at 6:55 p.m. Two cloud
base planes were sent to each storm; l:he cloud top plane was
delayed several hours before taking off (unknown mechanical
problems kept the plane from starting). The storm near Holly was
almost. !;Itationary, Whereas, the storm near Goodland was moving
steadily gou~heast~rly, pointing toward the WKWM target area
counties of wichita and Scott. The other two planes watching the
quasi-stationary storm near Holly were diverted at 7:06 p.m. to the
much stronger storm in Logan County. The storm passing GOOdland
was patrolled from 6:42 p.m. until two planes began seeding it at
7:20 p.m. about 15 miles northwest of Russell springs ,in Logan.

At 7:20 p.m., while the two aircraft were enroute to Logan County
from the storm near Holly, they were diverted again to a new NE-SW
oriented line of cells which had developed ill eastern Colorado and
had moved into the extreme northwest part of the WKWM target area
in Wallace County west of Sharon Springs. When seeding began west
of Sharon Springs at 7:31 p.m., a fairly continuous hail streak was
noted in the wake of the s~orm. The two planes seeding the second
storm in Logan County ~ere brought over to help work the Wallace
COU"ty stor~i all four were there working together by 8:10 p.m.
Seedi.ng continued on the line of storms as it pushed into northern
Greeley County and further into Wichita. At 9:03 p.m. it was noted
that the Ho11y storm finally had begun moving southeasterly I
possibly due to an upper trough pushing southeast from eastern
Colorado. However, the primary storm to be seeding at the time was
st111 in Greeley County. At 9:33 p.m., shortly before terminating
its flight at 9:45 p.m., the Scott City-b~sed aircraft ssaded again
on the old togan storm which by that time had moved into nOrthern
WiChita County. A second flight was terminated due to low fuel at
9:47 p.m., a third at 10 p.m. and the fourth at 10:09 p.m.

As the new line of storms pushed into Kansas from colorado, a much
larger line evolved from the new gro'Nth and numerous cloud mergers.
By 10:28 p.m. a nffi~ NE-SW oriented line ran from about 20 miles
north of tighton to MarienthBl and southwest to Holly. The cloud
top aircraft was able to get airborne at 10;32 p.m. and perform
seeding in Scott and Wichita counties until 12:l3 a.m. The four
cloud base planes were up again between 10:49 p.m. and 11:07 p.m.
seeding mostly for rain. Seeding was done over Hamilton, stanton,
Grant, Finney, Kearny, Scott and Wichita counties. All seeding
ended at 12:13 a.m. due to low inflows and, more importantly, cloud
bases and visibilities were rapidly deteriorating. The cloud top
aircraft opted to overnight in Lakin instead of attempting to land
in very low ceilings and visibilities at Dodge City.
