NOAA Environmental Office: Initial Activation Report, Form 17-4;
Final Report of Seeding Activities, Form l7-4A.

Licensed Operator: Signed operating logs will be submitted to
the licensed operator after each individual seeding period from
the pilot of the seeding aircraft.

lO. The nature and object of the proposed project is research, which is designed to

expand the knowledge of weather modification processes. It is expected

that the people of Colorado will benefit from the research findings.

Weather modification is a particularly critical issue in the moun-

tainous areas of the western United States where water supplies are

derived from mountain winter snowpacks. The proposed cloud seeding

research emphasizes the physical problems related to weather modification

in general as well as those problems related to the Colorado Rockies.

The reaolution of these problems is critical for further progress,

either in carrying out new generation experiments or for the conduct

of present application projects by private and government groups.

Evaluation of the effects of cloud seeding has long been a matter

of strong public interest. Since this research heavily involves the

------.-- --- - ---

measurement and the monitoring of seeding effects. the observational

--~-----

and analytical techniques being tested will be valuable for use in

other weather modification programs.

- --'------,_.--- ----

12. While past weather modification research programs have provided important

insight into Rocky Mountain orographic clouds and their seeding potential,

critical detailed descriptions of the cloud, precipitation, and seeding

processes are lacking. The project discussed herein is designed to

determine that location and mechanism of nucleation of natural and

artificially supplied ice nuclei, describe the growth and trajectories

of cloud water and ice particles, describe the mechanism of precipitation

of these particles and the efficiency at which these mechanisms operate.
